Twin sister owned matcha club that started in a backyard is bringing matcha and mochi madness to Adelaide

This monthly matcha pop-up that needs to be on your list of things to do, is giving us another dose of everyone’s favourite beverage this June.

Each month the anticipation and rumours build as to where and when the newest Matcha Room pop-up will be. Whispers around the matcha community start spreading and the suspense has us holding our matcha strawberry latte a little bit tighter.

Luckily, we’ve spoken to The Matcha Room organiser, Jen, who told us all the hot gossip about their upcoming pop up at the end of the month.

“Usually, we do get lines during the rush and before opening and people do love to come as it’s only on monthly so they always ask me when the next one will be just so they can make it!”

On June 21, the team will host their next pop-up at Schmochi, a cute dessert spot in St Peters that specialises in mochi donuts, sundaes and sweet specials. We can’t forget about their indulgent matcha flavoured swiss rolls with fresh strawberries and carrot cake with a cream cheese frosting.

“We often collab with Schmochi or Asian-inspired desserts,” Jen said.

The Matcha Room focuses on all the best and most unique matcha mashups using matcha from Uji, Japan. Think everything from a Red Bean and maple matcha to a brown sugar and earl grey matcha.

“We traditionally hand-whisk our matcha and stick to the authentic way,” Jen said.

The event, which started by twin sisters, is intentionally held only 12 times a year to give the matcha community something to look forward too.

Speaking of what fans look forward to, the drinks are usually at the top of the list.

“I would say as (the matcha) is super green compared to what some cafe would serve,” Jen said.

“Initially we were a home-based business, so we also made matcha tiramisu which always was a fan favourite.

“We were (one of) the first home cafes in Adelaide to do specialty matcha drinks as back then matcha was still new.”

Because of the successful home pop-ups, the popularity outgrew their home space, and this led to the collaborative events we see today.

For those who don’t like matcha, including and ironically one of the sisters, the team do house brewed teas and sodas as well.

This month’s Schmochi pop-up is expected to bring the same cult-favourite energy, with matcha lovers encouraged to arrive early if they want to avoid missing out.

Whether you’re there for the hand-whisked matcha, the sweet pairings or just to see what the hype is about, it’s shaping up to be one for the calendar.
