Winter might be known for shorter days and cooler nights, but in Brighton it’s the perfect excuse for one of Adelaide’s favourite community celebrations.
The sixth annual Brighton Winter Solstice is set to return on Saturday 20 June, transforming Jetty Road into a vibrant seaside street party packed with live entertainment, cosy fire pits, family fun and plenty of local food and drink.
Running from 4pm to 9:30pm, the free event is expected to attract around 10,000 people, turning the heart of Brighton into a glowing winter playground complete with festoon lighting, fairy-lit trees and the unmistakable atmosphere that has made the event a local favourite.
Hosted by the City of Holdfast Bay, the celebration marks the shortest day and longest night of the year, encouraging locals and visitors alike to embrace winter rather than hide from it.
City of Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson said the event has become a highlight of the community calendar.
“The event creates a warm, vibrant winter atmosphere that transforms Jetty Road into a glowing, cosy seaside party,” Mayor Wilson said.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for the people of Brighton to connect with their neighbours and meet new friends over a coffee, wine and maybe even a boogie.”
Throughout the evening, local traders will spill out onto the street, extending their trading hours and hosting special in-store experiences. Visitors can wander between shops, cafes, bars and restaurants while enjoying the festive atmosphere and sampling food and drinks from local businesses.
Live music will soundtrack the night, while a free silent disco hosted by Choons & Moovz will give attendees the chance to dance their way through the winter evening.
Families are also well catered for, with the City of Holdfast Bay Library team running a free kids’ zone featuring large outdoor games, chalk activities and soft play areas. Face painting and hair braiding will also be available for a small fee.
To accommodate the festivities, Jetty Road will be closed to traffic between Elm Street and the Esplanade, while sections of the Esplanade will also be temporarily closed throughout the event.
Visitors will be able to move freely through the precinct with drinks purchased from participating venues, provided they are served in approved non-breakable glassware.
Adding to the community-focused feel of the event, the precinct will once again be plastic-free, with Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bins available throughout the site.
With crackling fire pits, glowing lights, live entertainment and the scent of local food filling the air, Brighton Winter Solstice is shaping up to be one of Adelaide’s most atmospheric winter events.
