Code Blue warning issued across parts of SA as cold snap hits

A Code Blue Tier 2 extreme winter weather response has been activated across parts of SA, with extra support and overnight shelter available for people sleeping rough.

A Code Blue Tier 2 extreme winter weather response has been activated across parts of South Australia, with prolonged low temperatures forecast across several regions.

The activation began at 9am today, Tuesday June 23, and will remain in place until 5pm on Wednesday June 24.

It applies to the Clare Valley, Mount Lofty Ranges, Murraylands, Riverland and Upper South East, with additional support now available to help people sleeping rough stay warm, dry and safe during the cold snap.

Under the Code Blue activation, homelessness services and their partners may increase daytime operating hours, extend street outreach, promote existing support services and provide practical assistance such as clothing, water, food and blankets.

Safe places may also be made available during the day for people to temporarily seek refuge from extreme weather. Overnight accommodation or shelter is available under this activation in the specified regions.

Anyone who is homeless, sleeping rough, or at risk of homelessness is encouraged to contact Homeless Connect SA on 1800 003 308 as each location will have varying assistance on offer. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Minister for Human Services Katrine Hildyard said the activation was focused on protecting vulnerable South Australians during dangerous winter conditions.

“We know cold weather creates risks for people sleeping rough. This activation is about giving people somewhere warm and safe to stay, along with the practical support they need during the most severe conditions,” Minister Hildyard said.

“Our focus is on making sure vulnerable South Australians are not left more exposed during winter weather. Code Blue helps ensure additional outreach, support and emergency accommodation are in place for people without a safe place to sleep.

“Code Blue is about providing more support for the people who most need us.”
