COMING SOON: Australia’s only restaurant within a dolphin sanctuary is opening this spring

With a drive through boat dock and glass walls this new riverfront venue it’s bound to become a go-to destination.

Port Adelaide’s riverfront is having its moment in the spotlight with plans for revitalisation around the highly unused precinct.

Juno will be part of that energy infusion, with the new venue doubling as a restaurant, function space and even boat drive-through.

The venture is being led by Shane Hryhorec who has a bit of a thing for renovating old buildings in Port Adelaide and bringing the once-bustling suburb back to life.

Also behind Juno is the team from Daddy West and Confession, two venues already in Port Adelaide. General Manager of Daddy West, Rhett Dryburgh, said the project was inspired by the building itself.

“It’s such a unique space that had been sitting unused on the Port Riverfront for the past couple of years,” Rhett said

“In the past, it was home to another hospitality venue, a real place of meeting and community and we wanted to bring that spirit back while breathing new life into this iconic location.”

Situated right along the riverfront, it is indeed a prime spot for passersby and with a dock right out the front, boaties can pull up, order breakfast through a QR code and be on their merry way without going to the mainland.

“We’ll be catering for early mornings, perfect for a coffee before work or during a walk around the river, as well as late weekend brunches and weekday lunches,” Rhett said.

“We’ll also be hosting events in the evening, so anyone interested in functions or private events is encouraged to reach out.”

Being suspended over the water gives Juno the perfect view to spot dolphins within the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, which is the “only urban marine sanctuary of its kind.”

“You can literally sip your coffee while dolphins cruise past,” Rhett said.

The food and drink offering will lean heavily into supporting local businesses, partnering with suppliers like Mayfair Bakery & Patisserie, Milledge’s Distillation and Pirate Life Brewing.

“Expect unpretentious brunch and lunch staples, sweet treats, grab-and-go options, great coffee and a thoughtful selection of beer, wine and spirits that showcase what South Australia does best.”

Inside the venue blue tones make up the bulk of colours joined by warm wood accents that fit the marine brief to a tee.

The name itself is an ode to Port Adelaide’s history.

Rhett said that back in 1847, a steamship named Juno became the first vessel to enter the Port River actively steaming under her own mechanical power, marking a shift from colonial settlement to a working industrial port.

“Later, in 1904, another ship named Juno operated ferry services between Port Adelaide and Port Vincent, called the Port home and now lies shipwrecked just off Garden Island in the very river Juno sits over.”

Juno also happens to be a Roman goddess of marriage, protection and renewal, which fits well into their goal to establish the venue as a new hotspot for wedding and events.

“In some traditions, under the title Juno Fluonia, she is associated with river water, flow, and purification; a subtle connection to water and the river setting,” Rhett said.

“Her name also lives on in the month of June, which is also the name of one of the dolphins that calls the sanctuary home.”

With a boat-load of connections to the land, Juno seems more than a fitting name for Port Adelaide’s newest riverside dining spot set to open this Spring.
