A Coles Local supermarket and neighbouring Liquorland have been confirmed for Adelaide’s $600 million Market Square development, alongside a new wave of food, beauty and service retailers.

The neighbourhood-style supermarket will occupy approximately 1,700sqm on Level 1 of the precinct, with a 236sqm Liquorland set to open next door.

Rather than operating as a traditional full-line supermarket, Coles Local will offer everyday essentials, fresh produce and a curated selection of artisan, specialty and South Australian products.

The format has been selected to complement the Adelaide Central Market and its traders, while extending the precinct’s food and grocery offering beyond the market’s traditional trading hours.

“We’re excited to bring a new Coles Local supermarket to Adelaide’s iconic Market Square and the surrounding community,” Coles State Leasing Manager David Ivey said.

“The new store will offer a modern, convenient shopping experience, with great-value everyday essentials, quality fresh produce and locally sourced products from South Australian suppliers.”

The supermarket is the latest major addition to Market Square’s growing retail line-up, with W Cosmetics, Sushi Hub, Smart iTech Mobile, David’s Master Pot, Fandi Scissorhands and The Nail Bar also confirmed.

An internationally recognised bubble tea brand will join the development’s food and beverage mix, which is yet to be announced.

Further retailer announcements are expected in the coming weeks as Market Square moves closer to welcoming its first visitors later this year.

ICD Property CEO Matthew Khoo said the retail mix had been carefully curated to work alongside the Adelaide Central Market rather than compete with it.

“Our goal has always been to curate a retail mix that feels authentic to this location. Coles Local achieves that by bringing together everyday convenience with a strong focus on South Australian producers and quality local food,” Khoo said.

Market Square is transforming the former Central Market Arcade into a major mixed-use destination anchored by the expansion of the Adelaide Central Market.

The development will also include Australia’s first Treehouse Hotel, 234 residential apartments and a nine-storey office tower, bringing together shopping, dining, accommodation, homes and workplaces in the heart of the city.

Once open, the precinct is expected to attract an additional one million visitors each year and further strengthen the Adelaide Central Market district as one of South Australia’s leading food and lifestyle destinations.
