Hahndorf’s dining scene is about to welcome something very different, with Walkerville Asian-fusion café Faar Farr Away preparing to open its second location in the Adelaide Hills.

Known for soft-shell crab croissants, prawn Pad Thai toast, Japanese milk bread desserts and colourful matcha drinks, the café will bring its full Walkerville menu to the German-influenced town.

The original Faar Farr Away opened beneath The Watson apartment complex in Walkerville in February 2024, quickly building a following for its playful mix of Asian flavours, modern brunch dishes and desserts.

That same playful identity will carry through to the space itself, with the team planning to recreate the bright murals and Japanese-inspired artwork seen throughout the Walkerville café.

New owner Sam took over Faar Farr Away in November 2025 after spending years waiting for an opportunity to return to the hospitality industry.

“It means dreams coming true to me,” Sam said.

“I always wanted to be an owner of a restaurant or a café… it was always a passion.”

While Hahndorf is famous for its German bakeries, pubs and traditional restaurants, Sam believes there is room for a completely different style of café.

“I’ve been there so many times, and there is no such place in Hahndorf specifically doing this sort of food, like Southeast Asian fusion food.”

The brunch menu gives familiar café favourites a playful Asian-fusion twist.

One of its signatures is the Sawadee Crab, which piles crispy soft-shell crab, scrambled egg, massaman curry sauce, spicy mayo and apple salad onto a toasted croissant.

Sam said the prawn Pad Thai toast, served on honey shokupan, was another must-try dish.

For something a little lighter, the menu includes smashed avocado with cherry tomatoes, heirloom pink radish, feta, sriracha mayo and furikake, along with rice bowls topped with aburi salmon, teriyaki eel, pork belly or Japanese curry chicken.

There are plenty of casual options too, from fried chicken and truffle beef burgers to tom yum fried chicken, corn ribs and truffle fries. Even the breakfast bowls lean into the café’s colourful style, blending açaí, mango, berries and coconut milk with fresh fruit, granola and mixed nuts.

The sweeter side of the menu is just as playful.

Think sundaes, waffles and thick-cut Japanese shokupan in flavours including apple Biscoff crumble, pistachio chocolate and the café’s popular pandan kaya, which Sam said was made from scratch.

There is also pandan mango bingsu, as well as taro bingsu topped with ube tiramisu and strawberry popping pearls.

The drinks list is also expected to bring something different to the Adelaide Hills town, with matcha available in strawberry, mango, taro and Yakult varieties.

“I don’t think there is a place in Hahndorf doing all these specialty drinks, like strawberry matcha, mango matcha and taro matcha.”

Adelaide Hills locals will soon no longer need to travel far, far away for colourful desserts and Asian-fusion brunch favourites.
