South Australia has recorded three new H5 bird flu events, including detections involving an Australian sea lion and a little penguin, bringing the statewide total to 290.
The latest testing update confirmed new events involving an Australian sea lion at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island, a greater crested tern at Port Noarlunga South and a little penguin at Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
A total of 2,148 tests have now been carried out since January 1, while 10,694 reports have been made to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline since June 20. The State Government reports H5 bird flu detections as “events” rather than individual animals, in line with national protocols, meaning one event can involve one or more animals.
There continue to be no confirmed H5 bird flu detections in poultry or other livestock in South Australia, while authorities say the risk to human health remains low. Surveillance and testing are continuing across the state, with the government working alongside primary industries, wildlife organisations and communities to monitor the spread of the virus.
South Australians are being urged to remain vigilant and report sick or dead birds and other wildlife.
People should avoid touching sick or dead wildlife and instead record what they see before contacting the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
Pet owners with concerns about H5 bird flu are advised to contact their veterinarian.
The State Government is also continuing its community information program, with the next H5 bird flu community forum scheduled to be held at Willunga on Tuesday, October 6.
