With the sun shining and the weather warm, when South Aussies aren’t flocking to the beach, they’re flocking to wineries and cellar doors. And now there’s even more of a reason to do so.
McLaren Vale’s newest cellar door, Thicker Than Water, has officially opened its doors.
The minimalist structure looks refreshingly modest, nestled amongst the vineyards off McMurtrie Road. But once you step inside, you enter a modern, intimate wine haven, with matt latte fixtures, vivid coloured lighting and floor-to-ceiling windows that enable natural light to shine through.
Two long oval tables behave as the centre pieces of the space, with trendy, high-seating to compliment the first-class tasting experience.
Senior Winemaker Campbell Greer says that the ambient, purple lighting inspired by the purple branding, as you enter the space acts as a palate cleanser.
“We went high-end, so that people can feel special. It’s a mental palate cleanser for people the moment they walk in, touching on as many sensory aspects as possible” he says.
And that’s down to the smallest details.
Patrons can choose from a selection of Riedel glassware to use for the duration of the tasting, with wine delivered on carts, giving the place an interactive, communal feel.
Thicker Than Water Wines credits the following businesses for its gorgeous venue: MDLR (Developer/Builder), Das Studio(Architect/Designer), Cook Building, Mixed Goods Studios (Cabinetry), Jam Factory (Fittings and Fixtures), and Hunt Furniture(Stools).
The family behind Thicker Than Water has been creating their award-winning Squid Ink wines for many years, which will be the focal point of the menu. The Squid Ink Shiraz, impressively, has gone on to win a multitude of awards – most recently achieving World’s Best Shiraz at the AWC Vienna International Wine Awards 2022.
Alongside the cellar door’s leading variety, the Shiraz, the Thicker Than Water team also serves their varietal Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend and Sangiovese Rose at the new venue.
You can find Thicker Than Water at 86 McMurtrie Road, McLaren Vale.
