Fringe drama ‘Between the Fractures’ explores mental landscapes in world premiere

Experience the world-premiere of ‘Between the Fractures’ at Fringe–an all female production exploring the mind’s protective mazes.

Escape to a world where the mind’s intricate pathways offer solace from life’s harsh realities with Small Dog Productions’ groundbreaking new show, ‘Between the Fractures’, premiering at this year’s Adelaide Fringe.

Running from the 24th to the 25th of February and continuing from the 29th of February to the 3rd of March at The Garage International @ Scots, this world premiere is a bold exploration of mental health and the inner workings of the human psyche.

This poignant narrative unfolds with Sam, a soul in turmoil, fleeing from conflict only to find that the usual escapes fail to provide relief. It is only upon meeting Mas that Sam embarks on an internal odyssey to discover a safe haven within their own mind, yet as Sam delves deeper into this cerebral sanctuary, a pressing question lingers: If Sam retreats from reality, who continues to live their life in the outside world?

Written and directed by Jaye Syson (she/her), who brings authenticity and depth to the production by drawing from personal experiences with depersonalisation disorder, the show promises to resonate with anyone who’s faced mental health challenges or has a loved one who has.

‘It was important for me to tell this story after being diagnosed with depersonalisation disorder and the events surrounding that’, says Jaye. ‘Talking about personal struggles is core to our mission as a production company’.

Producer Kelly Cusack (she/her) echoes the importance of this narrative, emphasising the company’s commitment to discussing personal struggles, stating, ‘As a female and queer-led group, highlighting and sharing these stories is important for representation and making others struggling feel seen’.

Small Dog Productions, a female and queer-led group, stands out in its dedication to representation and empathy, ensuring that audiences from all walks of life feel seen and understood.

The team have also been announced as the inaugural recipients of the SA Mental Health Commissioner’s Performers Grants.

‘We’re so excited to have been chosen as a recipient of the SA Mental Health Commissioner’s Performers Grants, recognising the importance of helping to positively influence the conversation around Mental Health’, says Kelly.

The Adelaide and Melbourne-based company, which made its debut in late 2020, showcases the talents of rising Melbourne actors Stevie McKeon and Lily Johnston. They bring Sam and Mas to life, respectively, guiding the audience through a maze of emotions and reflections that are as enlightening as they are enthralling.

‘Between the Fractures’ is a show for those who seek to understand the complexities of mental health or simply wish to be part of a story that mirrors the intricacies of the human condition.

In a society where the conversations around mental health are becoming ever more crucial, ‘Between the Fractures’ offers a fresh perspective on the universal search for safety and identity amidst life’s storms and is a show for those who seek to understand the complexities of mental health or simply wish to be part of a story that mirrors the intricacies of the human condition.
