Fringe Review: Bodylex

An exploration of light and sound, Bodylex is a piece by a young dance crew out of Melbourne choreographed by Rhys Ryan. An interesting show, it explores the demanding nature of rules and regulations of society and how jarring and demanding it can be on the mind.

Using a bar of LED light, the three dancers used space and an incessant chime of an increasing in tempo metronome to control the environment. The sound was ever present, subtly waning in speed noticeable to few but the most observant audience member. The dancers were dominated and strangled by the apparent suffocating control that regulations and rules either consciously or unconsciously dictate when it comes to the actions of people’s lives. How to conduct themselves, how we are able to function in society?

A shorter than normal performance, the principle themes of the show took a little while to eventuate. Once it did, it was involving and highly provocative if not slightly raw. There was some rather novel use of the three-metre-long LED’s bar to be the central lighting for a good section of the show. Whether balanced on the shoulders of the dancers or swung in a slow circle, it was especially effective in illuminating the performances of some of the particularly pointed moments in the highly politically charged story.
