From Hong Kong’s elite to Adelaide’s heart, Phoenix Sweets Cakery sets up in Hyde Park

Phoenix Sweets Cakery has opened on King William Road bringing handcrafted cakes and cupcakes to Hyde Park.

Phoenix Sweets Cakery is the new bakery bringing a taste of the sweet life to King William Road.

The story began a decade ago when Phoenix and her husband opened a bakery that’s dedicated to crafting edible art.

With a passion for baking and an eye for design, founder Phoenix Hui who was inspired by her love for feminine aesthetics and delicate flowers, opened four of her own shops in different cultural and commercial premises in the busiest districts in Hong Kong. And in 2018, she opened her flagship gallery store in one of Hong Kong’s most prestigious heritage buildings called Tai Kwun.

Over the years, Phoenix and her husband Gary carried on their legacy and became one of the biggest names in the industry.

“Back in Hong Kong we baked lots of cakes for huge local celebrities in both entertainment and political fields, our brand is a very well-known name for handcrafted cakes. We’ve been running our family-owned business since 2012 and we still have our bakery running in our home country,” co-founder Gary says.

In November 2022 the family opened its Adelaide store with the same look and feel as its counterpart almost 7000 kms across the globe.

Fitting in perfectly with King William Road’s exclusive look and feel, the Phoenix Sweets Cakery bricks-and-mortar store feels like a dream to be in. It feels reminiscent of a charming French gallery with cakes and treats on display – instead of art.

“It almost looks like a French gallery and people are always really impressed when they come into our store,” Gary says.

The cream used in Phoenix Sweets Cakery’s cupcakes and cakes is what sets them apart from other cake shops in Adelaide. There’s a whole range of flavours that are less-sweet that others and is a testament to the bakery’s commitment to delivering something distinct.

“Our cakes have a different cultural origin and we’ve brought that flavour to Adelaide,” Gary says.

With an impressive array of 12 flavours, plus 2 gluten-free options, there’s something to satisfy every craving. New seasonal flavours will be updated from time to time.

Among their standout offerings, the Tutti-Frutti cake emerges as a crowd favourite. A symphony of vanilla cake and lemon cream, adorned with edible gold foil and delicate flowers, it shows off the bakery’s ethos of blending taste and aesthetics seamlessly.

This design philosophy harks back to their Hong Kong origins.

“People from the new neighbourhood are loving the store, once they pass by and try our cupcakes and cakes, they always come back,” Gary says.

One of the best features of the business is that you can pre-order the cakes and cupcakes on their website.

For orders placed a day in advance worth $60 or more, the bakery offers free delivery service. Moreover, they are also available on popular delivery platforms like UberEats, Doordash, and Menulog, ensuring that a sweet surprise is just a few clicks away.

While the bakery thrives on selling cupcakes to those who want to gift them, its bakery is also setting the stage for more luxurious experiences.

Soon, Phoenix Sweets Cakery plans to offer high-tea services, where guests can immerse themselves in an enchanting environment while savouring a selection of treats, coffee, tea, milkshakes and more.
