The Glynde Hotel is poised for a stunning transformation, with the plans now officially in motion! Locals are being encouraged to have their say on the redevelopment project which is set to breathe new life into this iconic venue.
Located at the bustling intersection of Payneham and Glynburn roads, the plans are a complete reinvention that promises to enhance the venue with a range of fantastic new features.
Currently in the planning stages, co-owner, Matthew Binns, says the space is not fit for purpose at the moment.
“Over many decades, the hotel has been modified and added to,” he says.
“We are planing to turn the pub into a modern and exciting venue.”
Say hello to a vibrant new 100-seat bistro restaurant where you can enjoy delicious meals in style.
Complement your dining experience with a visit to the 90-seat front bar, perfect for casual catch-ups and celebrations.
Matthew says there will be no change to how they operate.
“We’ll stay open the same hours and there’ll be the same amount of machines,” he said.
”It’s all about giving the hotel a more modern and contemporary feel.”
The bottle-shop is set for a major upgrade, offering an expanded selection that caters to every taste.
The second storey will be transformed into a versatile events hub, featuring four exclusive ‘corporate box’ rooms, each with 72 seats. These rooms will be complemented by shared, tiered “stadium” seating, ideal for gatherings and corporate events. Plus, two additional function rooms will accommodate up to 80 guests each, with standing space for 200 people across both rooms.
The ground floor will boast an impressive 2000 sqm sports hall featuring a motorized ‘Vergola’ roof system. With rain sensors to automatically open or close the roof, you can enjoy the sports action no matter the weather!
To ensure a tranquil experience for local residents, the new sports hall will have a smart feature: if the occupancy reaches 50 people in the evenings, the roof will automatically close to minimize noise.
Enjoy the outdoors with a spacious 114-seat dining area and a refreshed gaming room featuring 40 additional machines and a large atrium screen for your entertainment.
Matthew hopes the hotel with it’s new look will be a destination for locals.
“It’ll be somewhere for the people of the Glynde and anyone visiting the East of Adelaide to enjoy with their families and friends,” he said.
The “haphazard” current car park will get a makeover with an extension to nearby Alford Rd, although this will mean the demolition of two residential homes currently owned by the pub.
The redevelopment will set aside around 580 sqm of the site for landscaping, making for a more attractive and welcoming environment.
The plan – submitted to Plan SA on June 26 – involves a comprehensive overhaul of the existing hotel and surrounding dwellings. The ambitious project will unfold in several stages:
Stage 1: Demolition of the smokers’ courtyard and construction of a new gaming room. This initial phase is set to modernize the gaming facilities and create a more dynamic environment for guests.
Stage 2: Partial demolition of the current hotel structure followed by the addition of a temporary ‘mini hotel’ adjacent to the new gaming room. This will ensure that the venue remains operational and accessible during the redevelopment. The plans also say two nearby homes will be demolished.
Stage 3: Completion of the remaining works, which will include the construction of a new two-storey hotel, function venue, drive-through bottle shop, gaming room, function rooms, as well as enhancements to car parking, landscaping, and signage.
The public consultation process for the redevelopment will run until September 26, 2024. A chance for locals to review the plans, provide feedback, and voice any concerns or support.
Matthew says him and his business partner Oliver Porter are ready to address any issues that may come up in the feedback process.
The Council Assessment Panel will review all submissions and consider any objections raised. If there are no objections, the proposal will proceed to the Council’s Assessment Manager for final approval.
General Manager of Governance and Civic Affairs at the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters, Lisa Mara says “a decision is expected to be made before the end of 2024, but timeframes for the decision making process are subject to change”.
“However, the exact timeframe may vary depending on the complexity of the review process and any feedback received,” she says.
When asked when he think the new and improved hotel will open its doors, Matthew chuckled and asked “how long is a piece of spring?”
“We are hoping to see the reno’s begin mid-next year,” he added.
They plan to stay open during the renovation process as they deliver a new modern and multifaceted venue that will enhance the area’s appeal and provide a range of new amenities for residents and visitors alike.
From the improved gaming room to the stylish new function spaces, this project aims to elevate the Glynde Hotel experience to new heights. Stay tuned for more news as this exciting project progresses.
