Since 2006, the Adelaide Festival Centre has held OUR MOB, which has seen hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists exhibit their work and share their stories with a wider audience.
To conclude their 20th year, the Festival Centre will host the BIGGEST MOB Family Day on Sunday 27th September between 1pm and 4pm in the Banquet Room.
As part of the event Mulga Bore Hard Rock, a six-piece family band from Akaye (Mulga Bore) in the Northern Territory will perform. The band’s sound is influenced by 1970s glam rock and inspired by KISS and Guns N’ Roses, blended with their own original sound.
Glam Adelaide spoke with Mulga Bore Hard Rock’s bassist and vocalist Kirklen Bird about their upcoming gig in Adelaide as well as sharing how the band first formed.
“Music is something that we’ve always loved. Our Uncles played music and played for us and tried to get us to play as well. We all got together and started playing and writing our own music. We love doing it.”
Soon after the band formed they were given the huge honour of opening for none other than KISS at their Gold Coast concert in September 2022.
“We were speechless when Rebecca, our manager, sat us down to tell us we were playing for KISS. It was mind-blowing. Performing on the day in front of the KISS fans was something we won’t forget.”
This incredible opportunity came about through their manager Rebecca McLean, who shared with Glam Adelaide what she went through to make this dream a reality for the band.
“They ended up being recruited into a course I was running in Alice Springs. I met them and when I heard them play for the first time, I was blown away. I was not only blown away because they were kids playing music, but because they were kids playing exceptionally good music. They were so slick. I couldn’t believe it. I quickly learnt they had an interest in KISS and their music. We discovered that KISS was coming to Australia and that stirred the boys up into a frenzy. I started to knock on every door I could think of to get the boys noticed by KISS but kept having no luck. I spoke to my friend Gina Riley from Kath & Kim, and she said she’d see what she could do to help. I also contacted the Australian promotor Andrew McManus. I finally heard back from him and eventually he offered the boys a 30 minute set before KISS took to the stage. When I told the boys, they were totally gobsmacked and couldn’t believe it.”
Rebecca is not only Mulga Bore Hard Rock’s manager, she is also the producer and director on a documentary she is making on the band and their journey.
“When I met the band, I was totally blown away by them. Then when the KISS thing came about, I really realised that their story is very special and needs to be shared. Because I’m a filmmaker I’m always looking for an interesting story. I’ve worked with the band to make music videos as well. With the documentary, we’re in the process of getting finance for it. We’re not in a rush to get the filming done because I want to make sure it’s done well and they are represented well.”
Kirklan and the whole band cannot wait to perform as part of the BIGGEST MOB Family Day on Sunday 27th September.
“It’s going to be great. We can’t wait for people to hear our music. It’s going to be an afternoon of excellent glam rock music,” Kirklan excitedly told us.
Before Mulga Bore Hard Rock takes the stage, get ready to dance the day away with DJ Angel on the decks and Adelaide’s very own Pop-R&B vocal trio, OPULENCE.
There will also be handmade goods from emerging First Nations artists and makers at the Next Gen Mob Market, and enjoy workshops, face painting, and plenty more family-friendly activities throughout the day.
