A Goolwa North home baker is taking her sweet treats from local cafés to the roadside, with Whisked Kitchen set to open its own self-serve bakery box this week.
Located at 5 Fenchurch Street, Goolwa North, the roadside stall is the latest chapter for Whisked Kitchen, a home-based micro-bakery that has been operating since 2021.
“After welcoming babies number two and three, creating event cakes became a little more challenging,” Whisked founder Kristie Rowett told Glam Adelaide.
“So I began focusing more on supplying cakes and baked goods wholesale to local cafés.”
“That was a little less stress and more streamline,” she said, “but my customers were missing the treat boxes!”
The setup is deliberately simple: customers can stop by the box, which is open on Thursdays and Fridays, choose their treats and pay through an honesty-box system, either with cash or via a QR code.
The selection will change regularly, with brownies, cookies, slices, muffins, banana bread and granola joined by a growing range of sourdough products, including English muffins and pizza bases.
“I bake in small batches so everything is fresh and made with plenty of care,” she says.
Kristie began her career as a chef in 2011 before discovering a particular love for baking after becoming a mum.
“Whisked Kitchen gave me a way to stay creative in the kitchen while building something of my own around family life,” she says.
“Baking also runs in the family—my Nanna and Granny were both wonderful bakers, and some of their much-loved recipes will be making special appearances in the bakery box.”
“Our apple crumble cakes and chocolate chunk brownies have been particularly popular with our wholesale customers, so we’ll be offering apple crumble muffins and brownie boxes in the bakery box to see how they go,” she says.
Sourdough is a newer addition to the business, but one product has already emerged as a clear favourite.
“The biggest favourite so far has been our sourdough pizza bases, so top-and-bake pizza bases will also be available in the bakery box,” she says.
Everything is made by hand in the certified home kitchen in Goolwa North, with locally sourced ingredients used where possible.
And while a permanent space is on the long-term wishlist, for now the focus is on seeing where the little bakery box can go.
“For now, I’m excited to see how the roadside stall grows and to keep adding new products and weekly specials,” she says.
