One of SA’s best and most well-known seafood restaurants Sammy’s on the Marina joined forces with award-winning Clare Valley vineyard, Pikes Wines this month, to present a six course degustation menu that would make any seafood lover swoon. Sammy’s restaurant is situated in the elegant surrounds of the Glenelg Marina and projects a stunning ocean view which is perfect when you’re dining on lobster, prawns, smoked salmon, and King George Whiting all perfectly paired with Pikes Wines. If you’re already cringing at the thought of having missed out on this delicious event don’t stress: similar wine dinners are set to be repeated monthly.
The degustation dinner was held in Sammy’s upstairs function room, a beautiful open space with uninterrupted views of the ocean and Marina. The dinner commenced with fresh Coffin Bay oysters followed by a creamy lobster bisque with herb encrusted bread. Both dishes have a strong ocean flavour well complemented by the delicate acidity of Pike’s Rieslings. The slice of salmon draped over a bed of avocado salsa, topped with a king prawn and served with mint sauce was a strong favourite among the guests. A refreshing and light dish with tangy flavour that blended well together.
Next was the King George Whiting wrapped in bacon and leak with a scallop in the centre. The Whiting and scallop were soft and juicy and the bacon flavour strong. A slight deviation away from the seafood theme came in the form of a Scotch fillet served medium rare with asparagus wrapped in pancetta, cherry tomatoes and red wine jus. A good hearty dish for winter.
The final course was a sweet treat. The almond and pistachio cake was moist with strong pistachio flavour and with a sweetness that worked well with the tangy and fruity tropical sorbet.
Overall, a lovely dinner with generous portions that will ensure you don’t leave hungry. The atmosphere is social and relaxed with good service. Sammy’s degustation dinner makes for a great night out with family, friends or just you and a fellow lover of seafood.
