New bulk food shop Heart & Whole opens in Port Noarlunga

The new shop sells the usual bulk food items (cereal, seeds, grains, and more) as well as grocer items and cleaning products in their aesthetically pleasing store.

Heart & Whole, Port Noarlunga’s new bulk food shop, has opened with a range of zero-waste products.

The shop sells the usual bulk food items––cereal, gluten-free flour, seeds, grains, nuts, chocolatey chunks––as well as grocer items and cleaning products in their sleek, aesthetically pleasing store.

Heart & Whole have hypoallergenic home and body products, such as toilet cleaner, shampoo, conditioner, epsom salts, body wash and more, all available from a tap to fill reusable bottles. With fresh bread from McLaren Vale daily, fruits, olive oil, toilet paper, and local dairy products on offer, the store aims to be Port Noarlunga’s one-stop-shop.

Couple Birdie Lo Schiavo and Luke Summerton opened the store out of necessity; As Port Noarlunga residents, they wanted to open a store where they could get all of their shopping done in a sustainable way at an accessible price point.

“Being so close to the ocean, it’s important for us to provide the community with the option to shop plastic-free for an affordable cost,” Lo Schiavo says.

“Bulk food shops have become this bougie thing, but my partner and I don’t think they should be; We want to destroy that stigma and encourage people in our community to be aware of single-use plastics at a reasonable cost.”

The young owner, originally from Coffs Harbour, comes from a background in bulk foods, working in a shop in her hometown as well as Glenelg’s The Source. She’s excited she and her partner have brought the concept to their own community of Port Noarlunga.

“The coast line here is so incredibly precious, and we thought it was about time we gave back to the place that has given us so much.”

The new shop is open weekdays 9am – 6pm and weekends 8am – 4pm.
