New state-of-the-art $80M cancer care centre opens its doors

A new St Andrew’s Hospital ‘green’ cancer care precinct has opened its doors in Adelaide’s CBD.

In a significant development in South Australia’s healthcare landscape, the newly inaugurated GenesisCare cancer care centre takes centre stage as part of the groundbreaking $80 million St Andrew’s Hospital ‘green’ cancer care precinct.

This state-of-the-art facility includes two massive, 1,800-tonne, steel-insulated radiation bunkers equipped with the latest radiation therapy technology, ultimately aimed at providing advanced care to South Australians battling cancer.

As the largest private provider of integrated cancer care in South Australia, GenesisCare has set forth its mission to bring cutting-edge techniques and technologies to the forefront, striving for the best possible health outcomes for individuals facing the challenges of cancer.

Dr. Marcus Dreosti, Senior Radiation Oncologist at GenesisCare, South Australia, expressed his enthusiasm for delivering high-quality care to cancer patients through this integrated cancer care centre. He emphasised the pivotal role of modern radiation technology in the treatment of local residents living with cancer.

“The new cancer care centre extends access to personalised treatments for more South Australians, all within a single location. As the precinct reaches full operational capacity, it will also provide comprehensive support throughout every stage of the cancer treatment journey,” remarked Dr. Dreosti.

GenesisCare’s cancer care centre offers radiation therapy services and treatment for a wide range of cancer types. Additionally, other healthcare providers within the precinct are expected to offer imaging, surgical procedures, access to clinical trials for eligible patients, and wellness services, all conveniently located under one roof.

Mr. Duy Tran, GenesisCare General Manager in South Australia, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to enhancing the patient experience. He highlighted the benefits of co-locating with other healthcare providers and initiatives aimed at facilitating patient access to their treatments.

GenesisCare goes a step further by providing patients with free on-site parking and access to complimentary transportation to and from the centre for eligible regional cancer patients staying at the Cancer Council Greenhill Lodge during their treatment.

Mr. Tran also underscored their pride in being part of a precinct boasting a 5 Star Green Star building rating, indicative of environmentally sustainable building practices.

The Minister for Health and Wellbeing, Chris Picton MP, praised the new GenesisCare cancer centre, recognising its role in complementing the services available to cancer patients within the public system. He emphasised the state government’s efforts in developing a new five-year SA Cancer Plan, highlighting the importance of research and clinical trials within South Australia’s healthcare landscape.

Housed on the first level of the three-story South Terrace building, the cancer care precinct is poised to offer South Australians affected by cancer access to diagnostic services, radiation oncology, surgical and medical oncology consultations, and allied health services by early 2024.

Developed by Cambridge Medical Property, the precinct integrates services from St Andrew’s Hospital, GenesisCare, Jones Radiology, Waverley Vascular Group, and Clinpath Pathology. At the official opening event, Jones Radiology, Waverley Vascular Group, and Clinpath Pathology join GenesisCare in celebrating this monumental milestone in healthcare delivery.

Professor Susan O’Neill, CEO of Jones Radiology, expressed her dedication to delivering top-tier radiology services to the Adelaide community, particularly in the domains of Oncology and Women’s Health. The purpose-built centre, coexisting with like-minded healthcare providers, promises to raise the bar in providing exemplary patient care.

This innovative cancer care hub, spearheaded by GenesisCare, marks a turning point in South Australia’s healthcare landscape, heralding a future where advanced cancer care is more accessible and comprehensive than ever before.
