Nightlife hotspot Hindley Street set for $15m upgrade

The goal? To turn the popular nightlife strip into a modern, family-friendly boulevard.

Adelaide’s well-known Hindley Street is set to undergo a $15m makeover.

The goal? To turn the popular nightlife strip into a modern, family-friendly boulevard. The Adelaide City Council announced the transformation, which is set to kick off next year and wrap up by 2026.

The revamp is all about making the street more welcoming. Extra parking spaces will make way for wider footpaths and more trees, aiming to draw in more family-oriented businesses and customers. The idea is to mix outdoor dining spaces, garden beds, and narrower roads to make the area safer and more pleasant for pedestrians.

The plan includes reducing on-street car parks and motorcycle parks and replacing certain turn lanes with expanded footpaths. This is a significant change, aiming to create a more balanced and user-friendly street.

A key feature of the new design is the introduction of “flexi-zones.” These are multi-use areas that can be adapted for different needs like parking, loading, outdoor dining, or retail displays. These zones are crucial for maintaining pedestrian safety and providing ample footpath space.

The council is currently looking for a design consultant to bring a detailed vision to life for the Hindley Street Main Street Project. Initially allocated $15 million, the project’s budget is projected to rise to an estimated $24.7 million after the design phase is complete.

The makeover will span Hindley Street between King William and Morphett streets.

This transformation is not just a facelift but a well-calibrated move to balance the needs of all users on the street, aiming to increase the footpath/activity zone space from 4553 square metres to 5534 square metres and plant thirty-three trees along with 226 square metres of garden beds.

The council also plans to work with businesses to streamline street furniture and transition from fixed outdoor dining to removable furniture. This upgrade is a part of the council’s long-term financial plan, with other streets like Gouger Street, O’Connell Street, Melbourne Street, and Hutt Street also slated for major enhancements.
