Love everything yummy, scrummy, and delectable? Adelaide’s favourite Portuguese custard tarts purveyors, Saudade, are opening an exciting new store at the Grote Street entrance of the Central Market.
Opening sometime before Easter, the specialty store will focus on its number one delicacy – custard tarts. Owner Carla Alemao first began Saudade back in 2017 at the Adelaide Central Markets, soft-launching her delicious goodies through its producer-to-residence program.
The pop-up was a huge success, which led Carla to speedily set up shop at the Mitcham Square Shopping Centre in 2018.
Saudade appropriately translates to “a feeling of longing, melancholy, or nostalgia” – named because of Carla’s longing for her homeland’s sweet treat.
Now, it’s a longing to return to where the business all began – in the bustling halls of Adelaide’s Central Market.
“Since we started our store in Adelaide, we knew we’d always want to go back to where it all started,” said Carla. “The Central Markets is such an iconic place.”
“We were going to look for a new store somewhere around King William Road and Grenfell Street, but when COVID hit, we could go any further… but then the Grote Street spot became available!
“We’re stressed, as you would be when opening a new shop, but I’m very excited.
“We’ll hopefully open in the next few weeks.”
The new location was due to open in December last year, but COVID-related delays and freight issues kept pushing back the date.
“We’ve shipped over a specially-designed custard tart oven from Portugal – they’re quite popular over there,” said Carla.
“Now it has finally arrived. We can’t wait to open up again in such an iconic place with great foot traffic – it’s going to be a great option for us and the whole community.”
The new store will open in the tenancy formerly occupied by Bakers Delight (opposite O’Connell’s Meats). If you’re dying to try some of Saudade’s yummy tarts, you can still find them at Mitcham Square Shopping Centre.
