South Australia launches new AI support program for small businesses

South Australia’s new AI Capability Pilot Program aims to equip small and family businesses with the tools and skills to harness AI for growth, with applications for delivery partners open until December 5, 2025.

South Australian small and family businesses will soon have access to a brand new program designed to take the confusion out of artificial intelligence and help operators put practical tools into action. The SA Government has announced the upcoming AI Capability Pilot Program, a hands-on support initiative that will open for registrations in early 2026.

Developed after extensive consultation with small business owners across the state, the program aims to bridge a clear capability gap. Many operators are curious about AI but are unsure how to use it safely, effectively or in ways that fit the daily realities of running a small business. The government is now calling for expert delivery partners to help shape the rollout, with successful applicants able to access up to $370,000 in funding over an 18 month period from 2025 to 2027.

The program will focus on practical, one on one guidance. Delivery partners will work directly with business owners to build confidence around AI technologies, develop tailored business plans and map out digital roadmaps that suit the scale and needs of each operation. The aim is to give small businesses the right tools and support to make meaningful improvements, whether that is automating basic tasks, improving customer service or introducing efficiencies that save time and money.

Andrea Michaels said the program reflects what she has been hearing firsthand from operators across South Australia. “Through my extensive discussions with small business owners across the state, it has been clear that there’s growing interest in AI and the opportunities it can bring,” she said. She noted that the program is designed to meet businesses where they are, adding, “This program responds directly to what we heard – that businesses want to build their digital capability but need support to do it safely, effectively and in a way that suits their operations.”

She said the government is looking for highly capable delivery partners who can help drive real outcomes. “We’re inviting experienced service providers to partner with us in delivering the AI Capability Pilot Program and help shape how South Australian small and family businesses can use AI to improve productivity and drive growth in their business.”

Michael Brown said the opportunity for small businesses to embrace new digital tools is significant. “There is tremendous potential for small businesses to use artificial intelligence to their benefit,” he said. “This new program will support them to use AI tools to effectively improve productivity and drive growth.”

Applications for delivery partners are now open and close at 5 pm on Friday 5 December 2025. More information and eligibility details are available at business.sa.gov.au.

The AI Capability Pilot Program is set to create a major boost for digital adoption in South Australia, helping small businesses navigate emerging technology with confidence and giving operators the skills they need to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving economy.
