Statewide Code Blue activated as freezing temperatures and strong winds hit South Australia

A statewide Code Blue has been declared for Monday and Tuesday, with extra support being rolled out for South Australians sleeping rough as icy conditions and gusty winds sweep across the state.

South Australia has activated a statewide Code Blue response as freezing temperatures and strong winds create dangerous conditions for people sleeping rough.

The Code Blue has been declared for Monday, July 13th and Tuesday, July 14th, with the Department of Human Services warning that the response period could be extended if severe weather continues.

The activation can trigger additional support for people experiencing homelessness across the state, with homelessness services encouraged to expand their operations and provide extra assistance during the cold snap.

Depending on local capacity and conditions, services may extend opening hours, increase street outreach, provide additional staff, and distribute essential items including warm clothing, blankets, food and water. Safe places for people to take temporary refuge during the day may also be made available.

People sleeping rough, or anyone concerned about someone experiencing homelessness, can contact Homeless Connect SA on 1800 003 308. The service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can provide information about available support and accommodation options across South Australia.

The Code Blue declaration comes as much of the state experiences bitter winter conditions, with low overnight temperatures and gusty winds significantly increasing the risk of exposure for vulnerable community members.

Code Blue activations are designed to strengthen the response during periods of extreme weather by coordinating homelessness services and encouraging additional outreach to those most at risk.

For South Australians wanting to help during the cold weather, organisations encourage checking in on vulnerable friends or family members where possible and contacting Homeless Connect SA if you see someone sleeping rough who may need assistance.
