Statewide Code Blue extreme winter weather response activated as severe conditions continue in South Australia

A statewide Code Blue response has been activated until Friday morning, with extra outreach, emergency accommodation and support available for South Australians sleeping rough during the current cold snap.

As the cold winter weather continues in South Australia, a statewide Code Blue has been activated to help protect people sleeping rough from the cold.

The extreme weather response is now in place across the entire state until 10am on Friday, July 3rd, which will see additional support, outreach and emergency assistance to some of South Australia’s most vulnerable residents where applicable.

The activation comes as cool temperatures, rain and strong winds continue to sweep across the state, creating dangerous conditions for anyone without safe shelter.

People sleeping rough, or anyone concerned about someone who may need assistance, can contact Homeless Connect SA on 1800 003 308, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

During the Code Blue period, homelessness services and community partners may provide extended daytime opening hours, increased street outreach, additional staff on the ground, practical supplies including food, water, warm clothing and blankets, as well as safe places to seek shelter from the weather.

Depending on location and service availability, overnight emergency accommodation may also be offered.

Katrine Hildyard, South Australia’s Minister for Human Services, said, “We know cold weather creates serious risks for people sleeping rough. This activation is about giving people somewhere warm and safe to stay, along with the practical support they need during the most severe conditions.

“Our focus is on making sure vulnerable South Australians are not left more exposed during winter weather. Code Blue ensures additional outreach, support and emergency accommodation are in place for people without a safe place to sleep.

“This is about providing more support to the people who need us most.”

The exact services available can vary between regions depending on local conditions and capacity, so anyone seeking assistance is encouraged to check the latest information or contact Homeless Connect SA directly.
