Adelaide is in for a wet, wintry start July, with showers, strong winds and the chance of thunderstorms set to move across the city before calmer conditions return early next week.
The middle of the week looks like the roughest part of the forecast for Adelaide, as a run of low pressure systems and cold fronts pushes through South Australia. Today will stay cloudy with a very high chance of showers and a possible thunderstorm this morning, while northerly winds shift northwesterly and strengthen through the day. The city is heading for a top of 16 degrees, with rainfall totals between 7 and 20mm possible, making it a good day to keep the umbrella and raincoat close by.
Thursday is shaping up as another cold day across Adelaide, with showers again highly likely and strong northwesterly winds gradually turning westerly. The temperature will dip to a low of 10 degrees before reaching just 15, with another 9 to 20mm of rain possible. By Friday, the worst of the wet weather should begin to ease, although a shower or two is still possible, especially in the morning. Winds will turn southwesterly before becoming light later in the day, and the maximum will again sit around 15 degrees.
The weekend will stay cool but a little less unsettled. Saturday is expected to remain cloudy, with a medium chance of a light shower and a top of 15 degrees. Sunday brings a slight improvement, with partly cloudy skies, lighter winds early and easterlies developing during the morning. It will still be chilly, with a low of 6 and a top of 14.
Looking ahead, Adelaide should finally get a brighter run of winter weather at the start of next week. Monday is forecast to be mostly sunny with a crisp morning low of 5 degrees and a top of 15, while Tuesday looks even better, with sunny skies and a slightly warmer 17 degrees. After several damp, grey days, that late forecast lift should be welcome news for commuters, families and anyone hoping to get back outdoors.
Across the rest of South Australia, the same frontal pattern will bring a broader burst of unstable weather through to the end of the week. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to push across central and eastern parts of the state today, with severe thunderstorms possible in parts of the Flinders, Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands and southern North East Pastoral district during the late morning and afternoon. Those storms may bring gusty winds and large hail.
On Thursday, showers will continue across the Southern Agricultural Area and may extend into pastoral districts, with possible damaging winds near southern coasts and small hail in the Lower South East. Rainfall totals by the end of Saturday are expected to sit between 5 and 15mm across much of the state, increasing to 15 to 30mm in central and eastern districts and near the western coast of Eyre Peninsula. Kangaroo Island, the Mount Lofty Ranges and the Lower South East could see local falls of 30 to 50mm.
Happy Wednesday, stay dry!
