Adelaide is heading into a wet and wintry stretch, with rain arriving today, blustery showers to follow, and cooler-than-usual conditions likely to linger through the weekend before things settle early next week.
For Adelaide, Wednesday looks set to be the soggiest day of the run, with cloudy skies, a very high chance of rain and even the chance of a thunderstorm across the city. Falls of 10 to 30mm are possible, which could make for a messy commute and a thoroughly damp day around the suburbs. Temperatures will only reach 20 degrees in the city, with northeasterly winds turning northerly later on. Thursday stays unsettled, though the rain eases back into showers. It’ll be partly cloudy with a top of 16 degrees, but stronger northwesterly winds of 25 to 40 km/h will make it feel colder, especially near the coast.
Friday keeps that chilly pattern in place. Adelaide can expect more showers, most likely through the morning and afternoon, under cloudy skies and a cool top of 15 degrees. Winds will swing from west to northwesterly before turning south to southwesterly during the day, adding to the wintry feel. By Saturday, conditions begin to ease a little. There’s still a medium chance of a shower or two, mainly in the morning and afternoon, but winds will be light and the rain totals look much lower. Hills residents may also wake to some morning fog, while the city reaches around 15 degrees.
Sunday brings a calmer picture for Adelaide, with partly cloudy skies and just a slight chance of a passing shower. Morning fog is possible about the northern suburbs, and with a minimum of 7 degrees and a top of 15, it’ll be a crisp winter day. Monday and Tuesday continue that steadier trend, both forecast to be partly cloudy with only a slight chance of a shower. Daytime temperatures will nudge up to 16 degrees, and while the mornings stay cold, lighter winds should make conditions more comfortable as the new week gets underway.
Across regional South Australia, the strongest weather impact over the next few days will be across western and southern districts as a cold front moves through, followed by another front later Thursday into Friday. Rain and showers are expected across a broad part of the state, with the far northeast less likely to see much early on. The west is the key watch area today, with heavy falls possible in the western pastoral districts and isolated thunderstorms also on the cards in the west and possibly central districts. Through Thursday and Friday, showers spread across the agricultural districts, with thunderstorms possible near western and southern coasts and strong winds at times near coastal areas. Rainfall totals by the end of Saturday are expected to be highly variable depending on the movement of the low, but parts of the North West Pastoral district, West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Kangaroo Island and the Mount Lofty Ranges could see 40 to 70mm. Flood impacts also continue well away from Adelaide in the state’s inland river country, with elevated river levels along the Warburton River at Poothapootha Waterhole and the lower Cooper Creek around Innamincka expected to continue for the next few weeks. Many roads and access tracks are already impacted, so anyone travelling through those remote areas should check conditions carefully.
