Hindley Streets newest upstair bar is bringing the Adelaide nightlife scene more cocktails, DJs and Asian-inspired flavours that we’re already craving.

When and where is a question that we love to hear during the weekly planning of a great night out, and they’ve been answered in the form of a moody, late night cocktail bar.

The bar, When and Where, has been years in the making for owners Annie Tran and her husband who are part of the team behind the long-running favourite, Gondola Gondola.

“We’ve got live music, DJs have been coming in every weekend, and the dance floor is always packed, so that’s good,” Annie said.

Once you’re able to find the venue, tucked away upstairs on one of Adelaide’s busiest nightlife strips, the mood swings into a retro laid back bar from the 80s with a glowing disco ball hanging above a tiled floor.

“Our bar is bright red, whereas everywhere else is darker grey and navy, so it has that pop of colour.”

Along one wall a projector flickers across the rough surface, creating a vision that’s transporting many visitors back to what once was, as old movies run through in black and white.

“And our cocktails have been popping off as well,” Annie said.

“We have a very unique signature cocktail menu as we combine Southeast Asian ingredients with the classics.”

The food offering is certainly something you won’t see in nightclubs along the strip. The unique selection of bar snacks feature an Asian influence that Adelaide is already slurping up.

“We’ve had the best feedback on the food,” Annie said.

“It’s different, it’s easy to share, and it’s quick bites and bar snacks, so you get to try a bit of everything.”

The snack already taking hearts of those who order it, is the truffle mi goreng, which is a bit like your typical two minute noodles with a fried egg placed on top.

“We also do a mini steak frites, and that’s been really popular, and then the truffle pho, I think that’s everybody’s favourite.

“My husband came up with it, he lets the soup sit on the stove for 16 hours, so it’s a slow process, but it’s really good.”

Other snacks making the menu are salmon sashimi, crispy has tuna, fillet-o-fish sliders, and WW’s burrata.

Later in the night, DJs come in, the dance floor fills up, live music mesmerises and the music changes across genres, so no one gets bored or out of the groove.

If you’re looking for a night out in the city that starts with a slower pace and builds more energy as the night (and cocktails) flows on, then we know when and where you need to be.
