Adelaide’s Evergreen Community Precinct is redefining the way we perceive cemeteries. Located just 10 minutes north of Adelaide in Clearview, the state-of-the-art facility is not just a resting place for the departed but a vibrant hub for the living.
At the heart of the precinct is the brand new 1947 Coffee Co. café, named in homage to the first burial at Enfield Cemetery, Albert Ronald Goodenough (and, I promise, this cafe lives up to the name).
Open from 8 am to 3 pm on weekdays, the café boasts an all-day breakfast menu that champions local produce. Their Panko Chicken Burger has quickly become a crowd favourite, and the Shakshuka Eggs are a close second. For those with a sweet tooth, the Summer Berry Pancake Stack is a must-try.
And if you’re wondering about the green hue in some dishes, it’s a nod to the precinct’s name, Evergreen. The café’s interior, with its green slate and mirrored walls, exudes an upscale yet approachable vibe, making it a comforting space for all visitors.
You’ll be caffeinated well, too, with the cafe slinging local, Port Adelaide based Cirelli beans, boasting great depth, thick cream and a rich flavour that will have you lining up at the door.
Adjacent to the café is Grace & Thorn, where you can find locally made gifts and bespoke floral arrangements, perfect for any occasion.
But the precinct isn’t just about food and flowers. It’s about community. The nature play space, a first of its kind in an Australian cemetery, offers kids a chance to connect with the environment.
Unlike traditional playgrounds, this space, equipped with timber play equipment from Playground Centre, is designed to blend seamlessly with its surroundings. It’s a place where children can engage their senses, improve coordination, and appreciate nature.
And if you’re thinking this precinct is only for those attending funerals, think again. The entry through Gordon Street ensures visitors don’t have to drive through the cemetery, although a drive through the beautifully kept grounds is always an option.
It’s part of a $25 million facility that has just opened in the cemetery, which also includes function spaces and reflection rooms.
