First Trailer: Star Wars: Rogue One

It’s time to get your geek on with the long-awaited release of the first trailer for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” – the first of the in-between Star Wars films.

It’s time to get your geek on with the release of the first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Filling the gap between the original film trilogy and it’s prequel trilogy, Rogue One introduces all new characters to the Star Wars universe to reveal what happened between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope. It follows a ragtag group of fighters who attempt to find a weakness in the evil Empire’s planet-killing Death Star by stealing the plans for it.

For those who have not seen the original Star Wars movie (released in 1977), that film opens with members of the Rebel Alliance attempting to escape the Empire with the Death Star schematics in hand.

The original trilogy told episodes 4-6 of the overarching 9-story tale, before a second trilogy began in the late 1990s to tell episodes 1-3. The third trilogy, which comprises episodes 7-9, began late last year with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

For the third trilogy, Disney studios have taken over the franchise with the aim of releasing one episode every two years. In the “off” years, they aim to release stand-alone films which expand the mythology, delving deeper into the Star Wars universe. Rogue One is the first of these stand-alone films, with future expansion films to include back-stories for popular characters, including Han Solo and Boba Fett.

In all honesty, Episode I: The Phantom Menace was not well received by a lot of fans when it was released in 1999, partly due to an annoying main character called Jar Jar Binks. Thankfully, you can avoid that film altogether (and most of Jar Jar Binks’ appearances) but still follow the over-arching story by watching the series in the “Machete Order”, which begins with the original trilogy but suggests a flashback to the second trilogy before moving on to the more recent films:

  1. Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)
  2. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
  3. Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)
  4. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)
  5. Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983)
  6. Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)
