Hundreds of South Australians will be offered a new pathway from renting to home ownership, with the State Government expanding its Rent to Own scheme into dozens of suburbs across Adelaide.
The latest stage will deliver 326 newly built homes across 38 metropolitan suburbs, giving eligible individuals and families more choice over where they begin their journey towards buying a home.
Under the scheme, participants move into a new home and initially pay rent set at 75 per cent of the market rate.
The lower rent is intended to give residents more room in their budgets to build a deposit and strengthen their financial position before purchasing the property.
Participants can buy the home after two years at a price locked in when they sign the lease, protecting them from property price increases during the rental period.
Premier Peter Malinauskas said expanding the program into more suburbs would allow participants to remain closer to the communities where they already lived, worked and had established connections.
“Our innovative Rent To Own scheme will give thousands more South Australians a genuine way off the rental roundabout and into home ownership,” he said.
“This expansion adds dozens more suburbs as Rent To Own options for South Australians.
“That means more South Australians will be able to put down roots closer to the suburbs they already call home.”
The program was initially launched in May 2025 with 125 homes across nine metropolitan suburbs.
The two stages will now deliver a combined 451 homes across 47 suburbs, with a number of residents selected through the first release already moving into their properties.
More than 50 applicants selected for the first 125 homes are first-home buyers, while six were previously on the SA Housing Trust waiting list.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Nick Champion said the first participants included long-term renters and first-home buyers from a wide range of backgrounds and stages of life.
“Every one of these homes is another South Australian family getting onto a pathway towards home ownership,” he said.
“The first group of Rent To Own purchasers was made up of hard-working, long-term renters and first-home buyers across many stages of life. It’s proof this scheme is reaching exactly who it was designed for.”
The SA Housing Trust will oversee the delivery of the next 326 properties, with tenders released to its approved panel of builders.
Construction is expected to begin progressively from late 2026, with all homes in the latest release scheduled to be completed by December 2027.
The properties form part of the State Government’s $1.3 billion commitment to deliver 2,000 Rent to Own homes over eight years.
Eligible applicants must be living in South Australia, currently renting and not already own property. They must also meet HomeSeeker SA’s income, asset and financial-readiness requirements.
