Illuminate Adelaide is in full swing with many of the ticketed and free activations already lighting up the city.

Now in its second week, the month-long immersive festival of light and sound is about to kick into second gear as it prepares for the opening of the largest, free CBD exhibition, City Lights.

If you’ve been in the city over the past few days, you may have seen all sorts of structures and arrangements being erected around the city as the crew prepare for the opening of City Lights this Friday and most of them are hard to miss.

For example: The statue of Sir Thomas Elder on the grounds of the Adelaide University has been covered in a giant snow globe for Jacques Rival’s installation titled ‘I Love Adelaide’. The piece is an ode to our beautiful city using his trademark sense of wonder to create the spirited, spectacular tribute.

As the sun sets below the oceans of the western suburbs, the streets of Adelaide will come to life with ‘I Love Adelaide’ just one of the many centrepieces you’ll find littered around the city between 15 – 31 July.

Taking place in Light Square, ‘Futures’ is a 50-metre-long walkway of moving light, soundscapes and mirrors encouraging visitors to contemplate how positive actions can create a positive future. ‘Submergence’ on the other hand, will take over Vaughn Place and, using thousands of individual points of suspended light, will transform the space into an all-encompassing walkthrough experience.

Back for its second year, this year’s City Lights experience presents a whole new program and encourages locals to rug up, brave the cold and head into the CBD to experience the sensations the large-scale activations bring.

Laneways, street-fronts and open spaces across the North, East and West precincts will be transformed and all activations are free.

City Lights is on across the CBD from 15 – 31 July from 6pm-11pm nightly.
