Adelaide weather forecast for Friday August 7 and the days ahead

Adelaide is set for a wet, windy and colder stretch, with showers building into the weekend before heavier rain and possible thunderstorms hit on Sunday. See how the city and wider South Australia are shaping up through to next week.

Adelaide is heading into a wet and windy stretch, with showers building tonight before a much stronger burst of wintry weather arrives on Sunday and lingers into next week.

For today, the city stays partly cloudy with the chance of early morning fog, but the main change comes later, with showers most likely this evening and a top of 19 degrees. Northerly winds will pick up through the day, setting the tone for a weekend that starts fairly manageable before becoming much more unsettled. Saturday looks similar on the temperature front, with a low of 10 and a top of 19 degrees, but showers are likely early before easing. It’s the calm before the bigger shift, with conditions across South Australia starting to turn as a strong cold front approaches from the west.

By Sunday, Adelaide’s weather takes a definite winter turn. Rain is expected across the day, with a possible thunderstorm in the morning, before winds swing around from northerly to strong westerlies in the afternoon. That change will drag temperatures down to a chilly 16 degrees, making Sunday the coldest and wettest day of the weekend for the metro area. Monday stays cloudy and cool, with showers most likely in the morning and a top of just 15 degrees. Westerly winds will remain brisk before tending northwesterly later in the day.

The unsettled pattern doesn’t disappear quickly. Tuesday brings another very high chance of showers, a possible thunderstorm later in the day, and a top of 16 degrees, with fresh northwesterly winds turning westerly. Wednesday continues the run of showery weather, with partly cloudy skies, another top of 15 degrees and strong westerly winds making it feel colder than the thermometer suggests. By Thursday, Adelaide should catch a slight break, with only a medium chance of a shower or two and a top of 16 degrees, though it will still feel wintry rather than settled.

Across the broader state, today begins with patchy frost and fog on and east of the ranges, along with fog about the eastern Eyre Peninsula. The northeast is expected to stay dry, while isolated showers develop in the west during the morning and spread southeast, reaching eastern districts by evening. There is also a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm about the southwest this afternoon. Saturday sees scattered showers across much of SA, turning to areas of rain about western and central districts late in the day, while the far northeast is likely to remain dry. Strong and gusty winds are possible about the west coast on Saturday evening.

Sunday is shaping up as the most active day statewide, with areas of rain across South Australia before showers gradually contract to the Agricultural Areas from the evening. Coastal districts could also see isolated thunderstorms, and small hail is possible about the far west coast. Inland and coastal areas may become windy during the day, and raised dust is possible in the far northeast. By Monday, showers retreat mainly to the Agricultural Areas, while parts of the Flinders Ranges and the state’s northwest may see patchy morning frost. Rainfall totals through to the end of Monday are expected to be light in the far north and northeast, but much of the state is in line for 5 to 15 mm, increasing to 15 to 25 mm about the Agricultural Areas, West Coast district and southern pastoral districts, with local falls of 25 to 50 mm possible across the state and over the ranges.
