Bird competitions will not go ahead at the 2026 Royal Adelaide Show as organisers take a cautious approach amid South Australia’s ongoing bird flu response.
The Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society of South Australia confirmed the decision following consultation with government authorities, veterinarians and industry representatives.
The organisation said it had continued to monitor the state’s animal health environment and review advice from the Department of Primary Industries and Regions, which is leading South Australia’s bird flu response.
RA&HS CEO Will Rayner said protecting animal welfare and supporting wider biosecurity measures remained the organisation’s highest priority.
“Protecting the health and welfare of animals is our highest priority, and we believe this is the right decision to support our exhibitors, our agricultural community and broader biosecurity efforts,” Mr Rayner said.
The announcement has been made ahead of the Show to provide certainty for competitors, exhibitors and volunteers, many of whom travel from regional communities and invest considerable time and money preparing their birds for competition.
“Our exhibitors and volunteers invest significant time, effort and resources in being part of the Royal Adelaide Show, with many travelling from regional communities to compete,” Mr Rayner said.
“We wanted to provide as much notice as possible so they have clarity and can plan accordingly.”
Mr Rayner acknowledged the cancellation would be disappointing for competitors and Show visitors but said the decision had not been taken lightly.
“After considering the ongoing situation and speaking with the Department for Primary Industries and Regions, we believe it is the right thing to do,” he said.
“By making this decision now, we can support broader biosecurity efforts and ensure expertise and resources remain focused where they are needed most.”
The Royal Adelaide Show said it remained committed to celebrating South Australia’s agricultural industries and giving visitors opportunities to connect with producers, exhibitors and animals in a safe and responsible environment.
