After the rumour mill circulated last month that the historic Edinburgh Castle Hotel on Currie Street might soon be re-opening its doors, we can now confirm it’s true.
In fact, it’s likely there will be a new internal fit-out and revamp which will help revive the venue that was popular for decades before closing 5 years ago.
Considering the Hotel holds a significant place in South Australian history, dating back to 1837 and making it the longest trading licensed premises in the CBD, it’s a huge feat to create a special space for locals once again.
In 2021, the property was sold for $2,500,000 and now has new tenants taking over the pub with further plans in the works.
A facebook post by Adelaide Hospitality Jobs gave a glimpse into the plans the Edinburgh Castle Hotel has upon its return; including a live entertainment area, a front bar, a massive beer garden, and a dedicated functions area.
In 2018, then owner Tony Bond handed back the lease on the property, leading to the closure of the well-known institution. The decision was, in part, attributed to the challenges posed by the construction of an adjacent $80 million student accommodation complex.
Now the venue positioned on the corner of Currie and Gray Street, in the lively artsy West End of the CBD, will slide in near the completed construction offering more patronage. The site is also in close proximity to the University of South Australia, Tafe SA, Adelaide College of Arts and is just a few meters away from Light Square.
Not to mention, there’s a number of new eateries along Currie Street making it a worthwhile strip, including French standout Maison Clement, creative haven Chicken & Pig, Japanese restaurant Umaii and more.
While the Edinburgh Castle Hotel has remained silent on its official social media channels, we’re looking forward to finding out the exact dates for the reopening.
