Bowden’s beloved Jarmer’s Kitchen celebrates its 10th birthday

Jarmer’s Kitchen, a South Australian institution, is celebrating it’s 10th Birthday this weekend.

It’s no secret the name Jarmer’s is synonymous with the Adelaide culinary scene. Whether you remember the Kensington Road establishment or have reached new milestones at the Bowden location, everyone has a memory of celebrating at Jarmer’s kitchen.

But now, it’s time we celebrate them. This weekend, Chris Jarmer and the team are celebrating their 10th birthday, a feat that is not easy to come by in today’s fast paced world.

Using his father’s catchphrase “fancy made easy”, Chris has carved his own lane in the culinary world, using his deep-rooted passion for food and hospitality to create a welcoming bistro that not only captures but helps explore the charming suburb of Bowden.

“My vision 10 years ago was to create a welcoming bistro that captures the charismatic neighbourhood of Bowden and explores the culinary essence of my culture, travels, and passion for food and wine,” Chris said.

“We feel really proud to be a part of growing Bowden from where it was when we opened to where it is now and we feel like our food reflects that. We are constantly bringing back classics, reinventing them but not so much that people don’t recognise them but are certainly able to appreciate them again. Our menu is predominantly how we love to eat, and lots of family recipes.”

Despite years in the cooking game, Chris’ passion has remained unwavered, whether it’s diving deep into the latest expansion or trying to replicate a recipe one of his kids has shown him on TikTok, he says there is always something new to learn.

“I’ve actually been going back to my books that I bought 30 years ago, to just see what haven’t we done for a long time? My dad’s not getting any younger so I’ve got to tap into his wealth of knowledge,” Chris said.

With a drive to bring people together, Chris and the Jarmer’s kitchen empire began to grow. From the modest front of the house, to the dazzling Jarmer Room fit for parties of all sizes, to the Little Private Room, The PJ Room and the Hamptons room, a cozy yet inviting space upstairs fit for any meeting or more intimate setting. The venue is the perfect location for either team bonding days, client meetings or if you just want to be away from the hustle and bustle while soaking up the lush lawns of Mary Lee Park across the road, Jarmer’s Kitchen is here to cater to everyone’s needs.

“We’re really a multi-purpose venue, it caters for everybody. We say that we do fine dining, wine dinners in the private rooms, bridal showers, hens nights, you name it” Chris said.

“We’ve really turned into a home away from home for people over this last decade, we’ve been really lucky at diversifying the business because it’s important to keep reinventing yourself and of course the brand.

“Jarmer’s Kitchen is the kind of place where mum and dad can come, bring the kids but not have to skip out on having just an average meal just so the kids stay happy, we want everyone we feed to feel happy and satisfied.”

No stranger to the bright lights, when Chris isn’t at Jarmer’s Kitchen, you can find him cooking up a storm for two of Adelaide’s sporting clubs, the Adelaide Crows and the Adelaide 36ers, ensuring your favourite player is eating right before and after their game. He was also recently announced as the private chef for the Australian Swimming team at the Paris Olympic Games. It does not get any cooler than that.

And while an accomplishment like that would be enough for some, Chris still remains faithful to his Park Terrace restaurant where home will always ring true.

So if you’re around Bowden this weekend, why not pop in and congratulate Chris and the team on this outstanding achievement.
