A father-and-son team with more than 40 years of combined hospitality experience is putting the final touches on a new eastern suburbs café designed around good coffee, comforting food and a strong sense of community.
Homebase Café is taking shape on Glynburn Road, where co-owners Anthony and George are preparing to open a relaxed all-day brunch spot they hope will feel just as welcoming as its name suggests.
Anthony’s father, George, owns Café Buongiorno and Caffè Dolci in Mitcham, where Anthony has worked alongside him for the past 10 years. While George ran the kitchen, Anthony focused on quality service and mastering the art of specialty coffee. And while the opening brings together decades of hospitality experience, Homebase also marks an exciting new beginning for the pair.
“My dad’s been in the industry for over 30 years,” Anthony said.
“For me personally, this is my first time opening a café. My dad and I have been in Italian cafés our whole lives, but we’ve never done anything like this, which is exciting and new.”
With the menu still being finalised, customers can already expect classic brunch favourites given a fresh spin, including creative takes on eggs and French toast, freshly made sandwiches and specialty coffee.
For Anthony and George, who have lived in the area their entire lives, the vision extends beyond simply opening another café.
“We just want to be part of the local community,” Anthony said.
“This is an area we’ve lived in our whole lives. We know the area, and we feel like it’s missing something that can help bring the community together.”
True to its name, Homebase is being created as an everyday meeting place, whether customers are settling in for a long brunch, catching up over coffee or grabbing something quickly on the way past. Inside, the café will feature a mix of traditional tables, comfortable booths, couches and smaller grab-and-go spaces, giving visitors plenty of ways to make themselves at home.
Something that will set the space apart is its large, undercover alfresco area. Anthony and George plan to make it comfortable throughout the year, with heaters and blinds allowing it to transition easily between Adelaide’s warmer and cooler months. The pair hope the outdoor area will encourage customers to slow down, stay awhile and enjoy the leafy eastern suburbs setting.
“It’s such a beautiful area, so we really want to lean into that,” Anthony said.
The venue is now in the final stages of its fit-out, with the finishing design touches underway ahead of its anticipated opening later this month.
Locals are already taking notice, regularly stopping by and poking their heads inside to see how the new café is progressing. For Anthony and George, that early curiosity is a promising sign that Homebase could soon become exactly what they imagined: a comfortable neighbourhood café where people can meet, eat and feel at home.
