You have 1 hour to escape from prison before the warden returns but, to do so, first you have to solve a string of logic puzzles to unlock doors and locks!

There’s not many other Fringe events that proudly claim to have a 30% success rate, but it’s this daring statistic that makes Adelaide’s original escape room game so enticing.

Two to eight players are locked in gaol and have to work together to solve puzzles, find clues and escape before the prison warden returns in 60 minutes. It’s aerobics for the brain because few of the puzzles are easy.

Players have to use their powers of observation and communication to discard red herrings, observe their environment and talk each other through logic puzzles to progressively unlock doors or combination locks, find the necessary tools to complete tasks, hack computers, and look at the obvious in fresh new ways.

The tension is high from the onset with a clock counting down the minutes and dramatic music keeping your adrenaline levels high.

Created in Bern, Switzerland by a teacher wanting to spice up his lessons, the Adventure Rooms concept has taken off globally with Adelaide boasting the first rooms in Australia. The puzzles are as frustrating as they are exciting. It kicks off the moment the clock starts and you begin exploring everything around you to find the first mystery to solve. And therein lies the real game – to solve the next puzzle, first you have to find it!

The game is cleverly designed to get the flow right, guiding the players through the mind-maze step by step, so long as you think through what your next goal is.

Gaol Break is one of three interactive puzzle rooms available by Adventure Rooms Adelaide, although it is their only adventure on offer through the Fringe. The other two can be booked directly with the company and continue to operate normally during the Fringe. (Read our review of The Mad Scientist adventure room from last Fringe). All three rooms are located directly across the Mall from JB Hi-Fi – look for the elevator, not a shop front.

Whether you want to test your grey matter, bond with your workmates or just have fun with friends, Gaol Break is an exciting, interactive game that fits perfectly into the Fringe ethos of trying something new.

Dare yourself.
