Adelaide crowned best airport for wifi across Australia

Data has revealed Adelaide to be the best airport with wifi in Australia. See the list here.

Adelaide, we are back on the winners list with our Airport cracking the top two for best airport wifi in Oceania.

Research conducted by Electronics Hub has shed light on the airports and airlines worldwide with the best and worst Wi-Fi services.

In the Oceania region, Christchurch ranks highest with an impressive average rating of 4.0, followed closely by Adelaide at 3.36.

On the other hand, Gold Coast Airport earns the dubious title of the continent’s worst Wi-Fi provider, garnering an average rating of 2.0. The airport boasts free Wi-Fi and paid internet kiosks, but the Wi-Fi is “slow,” and even mobile reception is poor, according to reviewers. “Badly managed, understaffed, overcrowded and inefficient the Gold Coast deserves better. Even the wifi is still at dial up speeds.”

Among Australian airlines, Virgin Australia boasts the best Wi-Fi service, averaging at 2.32 stars. Conversely, Jetstar Airways trails with a dismal rating of 1.14.

Though no Australian airports make it to the global top 20, Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia, Hong Kong Airport, and Helsinki Vantaa Airport in Finland lead the pack.

If reliable internet access is essential, you might want to steer clear of Sharm El Sheikh airport in Egypt.

Many reviewers have complained accessing the wifi takes almost over 15 minutes and that’s if you get sent a working access code.

The research also delves into in-flight Wi-Fi quality, ranking Garuda, Asiana, and ANA All Nippon as the top performers.

When using public Wi-Fi, it’s crucial to safeguard your personal data. Employing a VPN is highly recommended to mitigate the risk of unauthorised access.

Some 43% of travelers have had their online security compromised while using public Wi-Fi. Before you log on to that open network, consider taking these precautions:

  1. Look twice before connecting. Avoid fake networks by accessing the airport’s official network through its website.
  2. Surf like you’re being watched. Any public network is vulnerable. Use airport Wi-Fi “like someone is looking over your shoulder” by avoiding sites that require you to enter your login details, such as banks.
  3. Use a VPN. A Virtual Private Network is like a connection within a connection. Find a trusted one, and activate it in public to hide your activity from the Wi-Fi provider.
  4. Become a Wi-Fi hotspot. Depending on your mobile network and location, you may be able to turn your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot and connect your laptop or other device to it. Just be sure to set up a password so the whole airport doesn’t use it.
  5. Update your security software. Ensure your phone’s operating system is up to date and use trusted anti-malware software to protect against attacks.
