Everything You’ll Need To Plan Your National Food & Wine Festival

Get planning for the biggest event of the year in the National Wine Centre’s calendar where the best food and drink in South Australia will be on show.

Will we ever tire of celebrating food & wine? Of course not! The Romans and Greeks spent centuries toasting to it, while the French aristocracy maybe took it a bit far hosting eating and drinking orgies during the 1800s. We’ve got things a bit more together thank goodness… for example, at the National Wine Centre’s incredible Food & Wine Festival, there will be staff to help tell us when we’ve had enough. Bless their cotton socks!

Gourmet food and wine loves will no doubt be flocking in catch a piece of this stunning weather, the Botanic Gardens, the massive wine cellar, the beautiful food and drink – all the things. And it’s nice when we don’t have to leave the city for a change. For their third annual year, they’re pulling out all the stops to create an epicurean paradise, a hedonistic celebration if you will, where you can unwind and indulge in South Australia’s finest food and wine. Which we know is quality.

But like going into the video store (remember those) and being frozen by the sheer volume of good choices you could make, these things require a bit of planning to get right. Do you go for the Barossa or McLaren Vale wines first? Clare Valley or Adelaide Hills? What about the Coonawarra? What about the beer and cider on show?

Well, for starters tastings will be $2 per wine so bring coins. Glasses will be $6 and bottles available from $30, so factor that into your budget. At the ‘Market Home Base’ you will find several SA food producers showcasing their fresh, seasonal and local produce while on the terrace, overlooking the Adelaide Botanic Gardens wetlands, the Centre’s Executive Chef Tze Khaw will also be cooking up some decadent winter treats. You’ll want to prepare at least an hour to sample that. Then there are the masterclasses, hosted by industry experts. Those are $25 per person, and spaces are limited so this is where you’ll really need to plan. It’s going to be impossible to do them all, but if you study the timetable, you should book at least one. You can probably write it off on tax as ‘training’ for your job or something…
