August… the pinnacle of winter. It brings us cold nights and windy days but should that stop us from experiencing the great events that are on in Adelaide over the course of the month? Absolutely not.

We (barely) survived Dry July, so now it’s time to celebrate. There’s no excuse for you and your friends to say “there’s nothing to do in Adelaide,” because guess what? There is! And here’s all the info you need to know to make August the best month ever.

WINTER FOOD & WINE SERIES | 1 – 31 August

COAL Cellar & Grill’s Winter Food & Wine Series have dedicated the month of August to Ribs & Rockford, which is sure to knock your socks off.

You’ll be in for a treat with their set menu featuring Whisky and Maple Glazed Pork Ribs that sound deliciously indulgent and decadent, and will be paired with the 2018 Rockford Moppa Springs GMS.

SALA FESTIVAL | 1 – 31 August

The South Australian Living Artists Festival (SALA) is the largest celebration of visual arts in Australia and is running in Adelaide throughout the month of August. SALA takes the work of around 8,000 emerging, mid-career and established South Australian artists to more than 500 venues across the state.

Exhibitions include Sub Zero, Nuanced and Gerard McCabe’s ‘From Pandemic Woes to Pink Diamond Luxury’ .

FLEURIEU FOOD FESTIVAL | 1 – 31 August

The inaugural Fleurieu Food Festival will take place this month with businesses across the region hosting food-focused events to truly showcase produce from the area.

As part of the Fleurieu Food Festival, patrons can experience fine dining in a vineyard or olive grove, join a foraging excursion in the forest, tag along on a farm tour or learn new cooking techniques in a masterclass.

MICHELANGELO’S SISTINE CHAPEL: THE EXHIBITION | ALL MONTH

Enjoy an up-close perspective of the enchanting artworks and an insight into the life of Michaelangelo through an exciting new experience coming to Rundle Place.

Brought to Adelaide by leading entertainment discovery platform Fever, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition will bring a splash of Italian art and history to the CBD with a unique exhibition showcasing Michelangelo’s historical ceiling frescoes from the Vatican’s exquisite Sistine Chapel.

BOILERMAKER WEEKENDER | 20 August

The most performed opera of all time, La Traviata is making its way to Adelaide for a limited season opening next week, and will whisk viewers away to the streets of the French capital as you delve into the calamitous life of Violetta Valery.

La Traviata is one of the most famous and influential theatre shows of all time with the arias being used throughout movies, music and ads over the past century. Now it’s your turn to experience the magic.

HAHNDORF WINTER LANTERN FEST | 27 August

While the Hahndorf Winter Lantern Fest (HWLF) has copped the worst of COVID, cancelling their highly anticipated parade and market and activity stalls in 2020, they are back for their 8th lantern festival on Saturday August 27 at Alec Johnston Park in a gleaming celebration of the Hill’s most talented artists.

The night will embrace the very best of local and community art as well as embrace nature’s gifts with sustainably made lanterns.

URBAN WINE WALK | 27 August

It’s no secret that South Australia is home to some of the greatest wine regions nationally, but in a four-hour event, Neighbourhood Events Co is centring in on the city to bring you and your mates the Urban Wine Walk on Saturday 27 August.

Beginning at 12pm, you’ll endeavour on a self-guided wine-tasting experience that takes you on a loop around Adelaide’s East End, beginning at Rundle Street’s “premier gin den” The Howling Owl and ending at the contemporary wine bar, Hellbound.

It’s time to Spice Up Your Life and relive the 90s because Wannabe: The Live Stage Show is coming to Adelaide on 28 August. 

After opening in 2017 to rave reviews, Wannabe has toured the UK, Europe and has even headlined the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. 

While the actual Spice Girls might not be there, their presence is definitely felt in this vibrant live stage show that will have you up and dancing and reliving all the nostalgic 90s vibes.
