A new master plan has been drafted to revive Semaphore Foreshore and turn it into an iconic destination for long into the future.

The idea behind the overhaul is to make the area a highly functional, accessible, family-friendly place that can be enjoyed by everyone. With lots to see and do Semaphore Foreshore is hoping to become the new place to visit, meet and spend time all while maintaining its natural, nostalgic and relaxing atmosphere.

The main foreshore area will see a central plaza area where works will commence first with works along the rest of the Foreshore being subject to future design and funding.

The amount of usable open space across the precinct is looking to be increased with paved areas and wide pathways projected to surround formal grass zones. These areas have been designed with the intention of holding smaller events and gatherings with increased shade from trees and sheltered areas are also a part of the plan.

A major new feature and possibly the most exciting is the proposal of a water play area which has become a key part of the design. After consulting with the public, this feature was the most requested with the play area to see sound, light and sensory features for all ages, both during the day and at night.

New artworks and sculptures will respect the heritage of Semaphore and provide a real sense of place, including connected Kaurna storytelling elements throughout. The paved central plaza will be perfect for events and activities that require a hard surface, complementing the large grassed areas surrounding it.

A wide-open promenade with accessible steps and a new ramp to the beach will improve access to the sand and the jetty and a new shaded playground will sit next to a brand new kiosk, toilet block, and a new train shelter to the side of a large grass area for major events, with the wide promenade continuing to run alongside.

The plan aims to remain true to the history of the area, with iconic structures remaining and improved infrastructure surrounding them, which signal back to the history and heritage of Semaphore through the years. A large paved central plaza with incorporated artwork provides a place for a variety of events and activities.

The Southern end features a youth hub including a brand new skate park, basketball court and fitness equipment.

Night time is when the new foreshore will really come to life, with incredible, yet respectful lighting illuminating the entire precinct, to ensure it can be enjoyed throughout the evening.

All of this will come together to make Semaphore a destination all year round, in any weather, and at any time of the day or night.

The draft is now up for public review with the City of Port Adelaide Enfield asking for your feedback. Last year the council spoke with hundreds of people to understand what the public valued the most about the area with comments used to create this draft. Now, they’re asking for help to finalise the plans.

There are a few ways to provide feedback:
